Volkswagen ID.4 vs. Audi Q4 e-tron: Compare Compact Electric Crossovers in Clifton, NJ

With the car industry continuing its shift to a more sustainable automotive future, Volkswagen is doing its part to help make EVs more accessible and attractive to a wider audience. The first model to leverage the company's MEB modular electric vehicle platform is the VW ID.4-a fully electric compact crossover with comfort and versatile accommodations, practical range, fast charging capability, and high-tech features, including many as standard equipment.

The VW ID.4 is an impressively well-rounded vehicle and an excellent choice for New Jersey drivers looking for a battery-powered solution to their daily commute. Shoppers from Fair Lawn to Bloomfield can see it firsthand here at Gensinger Motors in Clifton. While it's not without competition, the VW ID.4 boasts a few attributes that set it apart from the field. Here's a quick look at how it measures up to its corporate cousin, the Audi Q4 e-tron.

VW ID.4 vs. Audi Q4 e-tron: Performance, Range, and Charging

The VW ID.4 offers multiple powertrain configurations so that you can select your ideal mix of performance, range, and value. Single-motor models turn the rear wheels with 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque, while the dual-motor, all-wheel drive setup produces 295 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque. Most ID.4 models utilize an 82-kWh battery to provide an EPA-estimated 275 miles of range in RWD or 255 miles with AWD. However, new for 2023, the ID.4 Standard offers a more budget-friendly 58-kWh battery (208 miles of estimated range), allowing you to enjoy the ID.4's versatile accommodations and advanced tech at a more accessible price point.

The Audi Q4 e-tron has a similar powertrain lineup. However, the RWD Q4 40 e-tron tops out at 265 miles of estimated range, while the AWD Q4 50 e-tron gets an estimated 236 miles. The Q4 e-tron doesn't offer a value-oriented option.

Both models are easy to charge, needing ~7.5 hours to replenish the battery with an 11-kW Level 2 home charger. They're also compatible with DC fast-charging stations. However, the ID.4's 170-kW capability can charge from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes, while the Q4 e-tron's 150-kW capability takes a little longer (~36 minutes).

VW ID.4 vs. Audi Q4 e-tron: Accommodations and Utility

The VW ID.4 and Audi Q4 e-tron have similar interior space. However, taller drivers may appreciate the ID.4, which offers two more inches of front headroom and nearly an inch more front headroom. Both models come standard with niceties like automatic climate control, heated, power-adjustable front seats, and a heated steering wheel. However, the ID.4 also includes proximity keyless entry, while the Q4 e-tron requires an additional package.

The ID.4 also has the edge in cargo space, with 30.3 cubic feet behind the second row and 64.2 cubic feet behind the first. The Q4 e-tron comes up short in comparison, with 24.8 and 53.1 cubic feet behind the first and second rows, respectively.

VW ID.4 vs. Audi Q4 e-tron: Features and Value

The VW ID.4 gives you more for your money. Both vehicles offer standard features like 19-inch alloy wheels, heated seats, a fully digital gauge cluster, and a 12-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. They also include advanced safety technologies like collision mitigation, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keep assist. However, the ID.4's standard driver aid roster includes Adaptive Cruise Control, while the Q4 e-tron requires climbing higher up the trim ladder. Even still, the ID.4 starts at nearly $11,000 below the Q4 e-tron.

The VW ID.4 comes with unlimited 30-minute charging sessions for three years on Electrify America's DC fast-charging network. The Audi Q4 e-tron only includes a total of 250kWh.
